Alleppey or Kumarakom?
Both sit on the same lake, 30 km apart, and both are good trips. Alappuzha runs through narrow village canals with more than a thousand boats on them; Kumarakom opens onto the widest part of Vembanad with around 120. Choose Alappuzha for village life and lower prices, Kumarakom for quiet water and birds.

Choose Kumarakom if…
- You want quiet water and a boat that is not queuing behind twenty others
- Birds matter to you — the sanctuary is three kilometres from the jetty
- You are coming by train to Kottayam, 25 minutes away
- You would rather moor in open lake than between two rows of houses
- You are travelling with parents or small children and want the calmer option
Choose Alappuzha if…
- You want village life at arm’s length — houses, schools and shops on both banks
- Budget is the deciding factor; there are far more boats competing on price
- You are booking last minute in peak season and need whatever is free
- You want the Nehru Trophy snake boat race, second Saturday of August
- You pictured the narrow-canal photograph and nothing else will do
Which one is cheaper?
Alappuzha, usually — and honestly so. It has several hundred more boats chasing the same guests, which pushes the bottom of the market lower than anything at Kumarakom. If the cheapest possible night on a houseboat is the goal, that is where to look.
What is worth checking is what the quoted figure covers. Compare like for like: whole boat or per head, meals in or extra, air conditioning all night or a few hours, and whether tax is on top. Both are about two hours from Cochin International Airport. By train the difference is real: Kottayam station is 25 minutes from the Kumarakom jetties and about an hour and a quarter from Alappuzha, while Alappuzha has its own station closer to its boat basin. If you are coming from Kochi by road, Alappuzha is the shorter drive; from Kottayam, Kumarakom is.
Is the cruise itself different?
The shape of the day is the same wherever you board, because the rules are the same. Boarding is around noon, check-out around 9:30 the next morning, and Kerala's Inland Vessels rules stop all houseboat movement at 5:30 PM so fishermen can lay nets overnight. Every boat moors by dusk and restarts after breakfast, which means roughly five of the twenty-one hours are spent actually moving.
Where you moor is the part that differs. At Alappuzha that is usually a canal bank with the village on either side; from Kumarakom it is open water, and the difference at night is quiet and a lot more sky.

If this is your only backwater night and you want it calm — book Kumarakom. If you want the close-quarters village experience, or price is what decides it, book Alappuzha and enjoy it. There is no wrong answer here, only a mismatch between what someone expected and what they got, which is the one thing this page exists to prevent.
